B500A/B500B/B500C Rebar Description
B500A, B500B, and B500C are three reinforcement bar grades defined by the European standard EN 10080 (adopted by British Standard BS 4449 and many national standards). The key difference between these grades lies in their ductility and toughness, not in their strength. All grades have a nominal yield strength (Re) of 500 MPa, but they differ in requirements for fracture elongation, tensile-to-yield strength ratio, and fatigue performance to accommodate different structural and seismic demands.
Grade Selection Guide
B500A: Lowest ductility. Typically used for welded fabric or non-critical, non-structural components. Due to its performance limitations, it is not recommended for primary load-bearing members.
B500B: Standard, all-purpose grade. Offers good ductility and weldability, making it suitable for the vast majority of reinforced concrete structures. It is the preferred choice for beams, slabs, columns, foundations, and other structural elements.
B500C: High ductility grade. Provides the best plastic deformation capacity and seismic performance. It is intended for critical structures in high seismic zones (e.g., beam-column joints in moment frames, boundary elements of shear walls), structures subject to dynamic loads, or those requiring high deformation capacity. Its cost is typically higher than B500B.
Key Recommendation
For most conventional building projects, B500B reinforcement is sufficient and offers the best economic value. Engineers should prioritize B500B and only specify B500C when mandated by codes or for structures with special seismic or ductility requirements.
