BS4449 Steel Reinforcement Rebar Description
BS4449 is the British Standard specification for carbon steel bars used in the reinforcement of concrete. It covers deformed (ribbed) steel bars and fabric, ensuring material quality and mechanical properties for structural applications in the UK and many Commonwealth countries.
Under BS4449, reinforcement bars are classified primarily by their yield strength, with the most common grade being B500B (characteristic yield strength of 500 MPa). The standard defines requirements for ductility, bending, and welding performance, providing engineers with reliable materials for reinforced concrete design.
BS4449 rebar is produced by the hot-rolled process and is suitable for a wide range of construction uses—from general civil and building works to infrastructure projects—where verified mechanical properties and compliance with UK structural design standards (such as BS 8110 or Eurocode 2) are required.
